Ceramic coating, with the prep that makes it work.
A coating is only as good as what is underneath it. Most of this job is decontamination and correction, because whatever is on the paint when it goes on is sealed under there for years.
What a coating actually does, and what it does not
A ceramic coating is a hard, very thin layer that chemically bonds to your clear coat. It makes the surface slick and strongly water repellent, which is why a coated car looks better between washes and gets clean far faster when you do wash it.
What it is not is armor. It will not stop a shopping cart, a stone chip, or a scratch from somebody leaning a ladder on the fender. Anybody selling it as scratch-proof is overselling it. What it genuinely does is make the paint easier to keep clean, more resistant to chemical staining from bugs and bird mess, and glossier for years rather than weeks.
The prep is the job
- Wash and decontaminate. Iron fallout and embedded grit come out chemically and with clay, because a coating over contamination locks it in.
- Correct the paint. Swirls under a coating are swirls you are keeping for years. Correction happens first, always.
- Panel wipe. Every trace of polishing oil comes off or the coating will not bond and will fail early in patches.
- Apply and level, panel by panel. Rushed levelling is what causes high spots, the streaky rainbow patches you see on bad coating jobs.
- Cure time matters. You get told exactly how long to keep it dry, because the first day decides how well it holds up.
How long it lasts, honestly
A properly prepped coating on a daily driver realistically gives a few years of strong performance, and the range depends far more on how the car is washed and stored than on which bottle it came from.
The thing that kills coatings early is not time. It is automatic car washes, harsh detergents, and letting bird mess bake on in July. Look after it and it lasts. Run it through a tunnel wash every fortnight and you have bought very expensive wax.
