Why automatic washes are what put the swirls there
Nearly every swirl mark and fine scratch on a daily driver came from the wash, not from the road. Tunnel washes drag the same brushes across hundreds of cars a day, and everything the last car brought with it is still in those brushes.
A hand wash avoids that by never dragging grit across paint. Wheels get done first because they are the dirtiest thing on the car, the paint is washed top down with clean media and two buckets so dirt goes into the rinse rather than back onto the panel, and drying is done with clean towels.
What gets done on an exterior wash
- Wheels, tires and arches first, with a separate set of tools that never touch paint.
- Two bucket hand wash, top down, so the dirtiest panels are done last.
- Bugs and tar removed, which matters on the I-75 corridor more than most places.
- Door jambs and fuel door wiped, the bits that make a car feel actually clean when you open it.
- Sealed and dressed. A wash with no protection is clean for a day. A sealant means the next rain runs off instead of drying into spots.
Red clay, pollen and the I-75 run
Three things beat up cars around here. Georgia red clay stains light paint and gets baked in if it sits. Spring pollen is not just ugly, it is mildly acidic and it sits in every panel gap. And anything that runs I-75 collects bug splatter that etches clear coat once the sun works on it.
None of that is a reason to panic, but all of it is a reason not to leave a car dirty for a month in summer. Getting it off before it bonds is the entire difference between a wash and a paint correction.
