Foggy headlights, made clear again.

Yellowed, hazy headlights sanded back and resealed with UV protection, at your house. Done properly it is a safety fix as much as a cosmetic one.

Why they go yellow in the first place

Modern headlights are polycarbonate, not glass, and they leave the factory with a thin UV hard coat on the outside. Sun breaks that coating down over years, and once it fails the plastic underneath starts to oxidise. That is the yellow haze.

It matters more than it looks. A hazy lens scatters light instead of projecting it, so you lose a real amount of usable beam at night while the oncoming glare goes up. On a dark county road that is a safety issue, not a looks issue.

Why the drugstore kit goes yellow again by autumn

  • Most kits only polish. Polishing removes the oxidised layer and looks great for a month, but it also removes whatever was left of the UV coating.
  • Bare polycarbonate oxidises fast. With nothing protecting it, sun gets straight at fresh plastic and it hazes again quickly, often worse than before.
  • The sealing step is the whole job. Wet sanding through the grits, polishing clear, then applying a proper UV clear coat is what makes it last rather than look good until autumn.
  • Masking matters. Sanding next to unprotected paint is how a cheap headlight job turns into a paint repair.

When restoration is not the answer

If the haze is on the inside of the lens, or there is condensation in there, no amount of sanding the outside will fix it, because the problem is a failed seal and moisture inside the housing.

Cracked lenses and heavily crazed plastic are the same story. We will look, tell you which one you have, and if it needs a replacement housing we will say so instead of sanding something that was never going to come back.

Common questions

Questions we get asked.

How long does it take?
Usually a bit over an hour for a pair, and it can be done in the same visit as a wash or a detail.
How long before they go yellow again?
With a proper UV clear on top, years rather than months. That sealing step is the whole difference between this and a kit off the shelf.
Can you do it at my house?
Yes, this is normal driveway work and it is one of the most satisfying jobs to watch.
Will it pass inspection after?
We are not an inspection station, so we will not promise that. What we can say is that clearing the lens restores a lot of the light output that the haze was scattering.
